How Long to Cook Tri Tip in Oven at 375

Tri tip is a cut of beef that was popularized in the late 1960s by California chefs in San Francisco. It comes from the bottom sirloin of a cow, just behind the shoulder blade. Because it is relatively inexpensive, tri tip is often used for barbecuing and roasting because it can be cooked very quickly over high heat without drying out like other cuts of beef.

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • In a large roasting pan, pour 2 tablespoons of olive oil and spread it evenly over the bottom of the pan with a brush or paper towel (you may not need all 2 tablespoons). Place tri tip roast in center of pan and sprinkle both sides with salt and pepper to taste, if desired. Turn heat down to 350 degrees F
  • Using tongs, baste roast with soy sauce mixture while cooking until tender (about 1 hour per pound). Remove from oven when done cooking and let rest 10 minutes before slicing into thin slices against grain for serving

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  • Place tri tip in baking dish, add marinade to the top of the tri tip and cook for about 30 minutes or until internal temperature reaches 135 degrees F for medium rare, 145 degrees F for medium (about 2 lbs), 155 degrees F for well done (about 4 lbs)
