Cake Preparation

To begin, follow the instructions on the back of the cake mix box. In a bowl, combine the dry cake mix, 1 cup of water, half a cup of oil, and three eggs. Use an electric beater to mix the batter for about a minute, until it’s smooth. Then, spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray and pour in the batter. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 45 minutes.

Once the cake is done, run a knife or spatula around the edges of the dish to release any cake that may have stuck to the sides. Carefully transfer the cake onto a cooling rack and let it cool completely. Next, trim off the brown edges from the entire cake. You can either discard them or enjoy them as a snack later.

Crumbling and Mixing

Now it’s time to crumble the cake. In a bowl, use your fingers to break the cake into fine pieces. If you find any larger pieces, simply break them up a little more. Once the cake is crumbled, add two tablespoons of Pillsbury creamy supreme vanilla frosting to the bowl of cake crumbs. Mix the frosting into the cake using your hands. You’ll know it’s mixed well when you can compress a handful of the mixture and it holds its shape without any traces of marbled frosting.

Shaping the Cake Pops

To shape each cake pop, grab a small handful of the mixture and compress it tightly into a ball using your hands. Place it into a 1.25-inch cake pop former (also known as a meat baller). If you don’t have a cake pop former, you can shape them by hand. Just make sure to compress the cake ball well to avoid it falling apart.

Place each formed cake ball onto a baking dish lined with parchment paper and set aside.

Decorating the Cake Pops

In a small bowl, melt 1/4 cup of candy melts. Dip the end of each cake pop stick into the melted candy and insert it about halfway through each cake ball. Place the cake pops back onto the parchment paper and freeze them for 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, heat 12 ounces of pink candy melts in 30-second intervals, whisking in one and a half teaspoons of Crisco shortening or coconut oil. This will help thin out the melted candy, ensuring it’s not too heavy on the delicate cake pops.

Transfer the well-mixed melted candy into a tall narrow cup. Dip each cake pop into the melted candy, tilting it back and forth to ensure it’s fully coated. Give the cake pop a gentle shake if necessary. Hold the cake pop at a 45-degree angle and tap the hand holding the pop to remove any excess melted candy.

While the candy coating is still warm, sprinkle the cake pops with white nonpareils and place them into a block of styrofoam to cool and set.
